For the reading this week, I focused on the article titled "Assessing language learning in virtual exchange: suggestions from the field of language assessment", which showed several things that should be noticed by the teachers when conducting assessments for the language comprehension in virtual exchanges. I found it interesting and useful to enhance my knowledge in virtual learning assessment —— "how to assess learners' acquisition correctly and effectively".
For me, the assessment for online participation and language acquisition should not fully emphasize the students' learning outcome, but should focus on their behaviours and willingness to take part in communications as well. Measurable outcomes such as test scores or completed tasks may not fully explain the complexity of language development. Language acquisition is a gradual and dynamic process, which is strongly influenced by learners’ motivation and interaction.
The article also reminded me of my college life, one of my favorite online classes. The professor divided the evaluation of the grade into two parts. One is the participation and willingness to cooperate with other students, another one is the actual score for three tests. This pattern was really motivating students to share their opinions, which is not only benefitial for building a contextual environment for their acquisition and communication, but also helps the teacher to track their studying progress. By the end of the class, most of the students had improved their listening and speaking skills. The professor did a great work.
Therefore, as teachers, our great goal for online classes should not only be helping the students get more knowledge about the target language, but also should be promoting the mutual communication. In that case, assessment for their communication ability and actual knowledge, the combination, is really crucial.
