For this week's reading, I mainly focused on Chen et al.'s article, this article introduced the application of AI technologies in second language learning. The author emphasizes the importance of balancing AI with traditional teaching methods and using these tools responsibly in language education.
Lai, C., & Gu, M. (2011). Self-regulated out-of-class language learning with technology. Computer Assisted Language Learning, 24(4), 317–335.
Lai and Gu mentioned the importance of teachers actively encourage and guide students to use technology outside the classroom to enhance their language learning. Teachers' support is in various forms, including sharing useful technical and resource information and providing instruction. In other words, the role of the teacher is a "facilitator", not a simple knowledge lecturer. It is also worth mentioning that the scholars believe that the key goal is that teachers should consciously attach importance to this kind of encouragement and make it an indispensable part of the teaching process, so that students can make use of technological advantages for language learning. I also regard this as one of the most important principles for education integrated with AI.
Cardoso, W. (2018). Learning L2 pronunciation with a text-to-speech synthesizer.
According to Cardoso's research group, text-to-speech (TTS) technology is closely related to automatic speech recognition (ASR), which can convert written text into speech with natural intonation and pronunciation. TTS technology has shown great potential in improving L2 pronunciation teaching. Research shows that TTS technology is very suitable for second language classroom. If being used properly in the classroom under the clear instruction of the teacher, this would help students shape a better understanding about English pronunciation. Meanwhile, this can significantly improve the second language learners' listening skills, phonological awareness and overall language understanding ability.
Chen et al. Applying AI Technologies in Second Language Learning
As the author mentioned, AI could be a double-edged sword. AI is reshaping the way people acquire knowledge and providing rich learning tools and resources through digital devices. However, the increasing proliferation of false information and false information promoted by AI highlights the need for users to adopt a more critical and discriminating attitude when using such technologies. The availability of misleading content has caused people to question the reliability of information driven by AI. Therefore, it is very important to use AI cautiously in the field of education. Academic honesty is one of the most important iron laws of education.
