Today's articles are about several learning modes. As a student who has experienced college life in both modes, I feel the articles quite intersting.
F2F
Face to face classes, the most traditional learning mode, was highly respected by the teachers before 2020. In this mode, the students are able to receive instant feedback, enjoy interaction with the classmates and the teacher, and a relative stable studying environment. Those factors are helpful in increasing students' sense of participation. As for teachers, they can observe students' behaviours like expression, body language and emotional response, in that way, they can adjust their teaching pace and increase the effectiveness of the class.
But this mode also have several shortcomings. It has a strong dependence on time and space, and students must arrive at the designated place for classes at a fixed time, which reduces the flexibility to some extent and may cause a burden to students who have part-time jobs, internships or commute far away. I believe that nobody can still be energetic after 2 hours for commuting, this will cut their efficiency for studying.
Online
In the beginning period of epidemic, I was taught online for almost three semesters, experienced both synchronous and asynchronous. I personally think synchronous is more effective because when I took classes with my classmates together, even if I was in my bedroom, sitting in front of the laptop, the cooperation and communication with the classmates, as well as the interaction with the professors, can give me a sense of "I am still in the actual classroom". I think the biggest advantage of this model are its instant communication and strong interactivity. For instance, students can ask questions and participate in discussions with other classmates, and teachers can adjust the teaching style in time according to students' feedback, thus making up for the lack of face-to-face communication in online teaching to some extent. In addition, synchronous classroom helps to maintain learning pace and discipline, and enhance the sense of "presence" and participation in learning. Though sometimes the Internet speed could be a problem, generally speaking, it is the coziest mode for my own learning style. As for online asynchronous, the deficiency of asynchronous teaching lies in the lack of immediate interaction and emotional connection, which may lead to students' loneliness or decreased participation. If there is no effective curriculum design and supervision mechanism, the learning motivation may also be weakened.
Hyflex
In this mode, students can freely choose to attend classes in the classroom or participate in courses online according to their own situation, and even switch learning methods between different weeks. The biggest advantage of this model lies in its high flexibility and selectivity. It provides more opportunities for students with time constraints, geographical constraints or special circumstances (such as health problems) to participate in the classroom, and also enhances the inclusiveness and fairness of education. I chose hyflex because I had to postpone my return to Japan for one semester due to physical reasons at the end of the epidemic, but thanks to the teacher's balance of participation, I was able to communicate with my classmates easily and learn new content.
