Today, a brand new noun phrase "Digital Native" was introduced to me in an article. I can't help but wonder my digital identity. I was born in the beginning of the twenty-first century, though at that time, computers were not widely used in the world, I had opportunity to explore things online by using the PC in our home. I would rather consider myself a digital native with considerable digital literacy. This is because I used computer to search appropriate contents under my parents' instruction. That helped me to critically sift useful or negative contents online.
Digital Natives in present days?
I am thinking about the digital natives in present days. I believe that their digital ability would be higher than mine because they are born with surrounded technologies like AI and many kinds of smart devices. They gain more detailed knowledge about how to utalize digital tools online, by watching TikTok or Youtube, or even just learn from their friend's posts in social medias. But do they actually know how to distinguish different contents? Well, many of the young digital natives that I know, they do not behave well in this aspect. Younger digital natives tend to copy the famous styles and mainstream online, regardless of its correctness. This cause many children began to learn something that are really, really bad. When I was a child, both my friends and I were friendly to each other, we shared a cooperative and positive atmosphere together. But nowadays, the hostility of the new generation of digital natives is rising. They learn bad words quite easily and without the clear instruction related to digital literacy by their parents, they are facing tough conditions of content filtering.
How to develop digital literacy?
With the emergence of more and more advanced technologies, the digital ability of the digital natives are rising in a surprising speed, that is why the instruction of digital literacy is urgent nowadays. People should learn instructions about being able to judge the authenticity, reliability and prejudice of information. Develop their critical thinking abilities and select useful information is one of the most important methods to rise their digital literacy. Additionally, if they manage to use AI as a partner instead of a task completer, it would be more effective for their digital learning progress. At the same time, digital literacy should also include a sense of ethical responsibility, such as respecting academic integrity, protecting personal data, and avoiding the spread of false information. Only by combining technical skills with critical judgment and moral consciousness can digital natives truly adapt to the rapidly changing digital world and meaningfully use technology for lifelong learning.
